$29.52 - $39.37 per hour.
SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:
Stanford Center on China’s Economy and Institutions (SCCEI) is a joint center of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. SCCEI is Stanford’s home for empirical, multidisciplinary research on China’s economy. We aim to foster path-breaking research, create transformative student experiences, and advance public understanding of China’s economy and its impact on the world. Programs within SCCEI include the Rural Education Action Program (REAP), an impact evaluation organization that aims to inform sound education, health, and nutrition policy in China.
This position is a one-year Fixed-Term appointment, with possibility of renewal based on programmatic need and funding availability, with a primary work site on Stanford University’s main campus. Hybrid work schedule (partially on and off site) will be considered which is subject to training and team needs.
POSITION SUMMARY:
SCCEI is seeking a Social Science Research Professional 1 to provide project management support related to Social Science research in rural China. The candidate will work with SCCEI’s faculty, staff, international visitors and partners. This position may offer occasional travel to China. The position requires fluency in both written and verbal Mandarin Chinese, proven English writing skills, as well as a firm understanding of development economics, Social Science research methodologies, and issues related to youth mental health.
The candidate will help organize and develop project materials, especially related to SCCEI’s work on rural China. Responsibilities will include interacting with academic partners at Stanford and team members at other universities, drafting operation protocols for use in field projects, assisting with project registrations and study protocol development, and general project management. The candidate will also be asked to assist with proposal preparation, submission and formatting, managing IRB protocol review, and working with SCCEI’s administration team to facilitate funding transfers to overseas partners.
This is a 100% FTE fixed-term, benefits-eligible position. The term concludes one year from the start date and may be extended based on programmatic need and funding availability.
PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Spoken and written fluency in Mandarin Chinese is required. The position may require occasional travel to China.
Have experience in academic research and writing/publishing; and have a good understanding of the literature regarding rural China development and/or youth mental health. Demonstrated experience with MS Office, Google Suite, and an educational background in Social Sciences required.
One to two years field experience in rural China, and experience drafting economic and child development papers for academic publication is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated experience with MS Office, Google Suite preferred.
Core Duties:
- Plan and perform research tasks requiring initiative and judgment by applying basic knowledge and understanding of scientific theory when precedents do not provide specific guidance. General instruction provided by the supervisor as needed. May interpret study results in collaboration with supervisor or PI.
- Participate in the development and administration of survey instruments and rating scales requiring judgment in applying non-routine procedures. Analyze and summarize results for review with supervisor. Audit the accuracy and validity of data
- Review and audit case report forms for completion and accuracy with source documents, and ensure compliance with research protocols.
- Identify, select, extract and summarize data and structured information. Present summary of findings to supervisor.
- Conduct literature searches, and write literature summaries and manuscripts, requiring preliminary judgments after the supervisor outlines conceptual approach.
- Build and organize data as requested by principal investigator or supervisor; use common statistical programs requiring the application of job control language in generating and organizing data.
- Adapt new, nonstandard methods outlined by supervisor in designing and evaluating phases of research projects, (i.e., educational materials, questionnaires, strategies for recruitment, data quality control procedures and processes). May follow up with Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure renewals are approved and completed, seeking guidance where necessary.
- Assist with development, communication and design of research findings to internal and external audiences, which may include web updates, social media, and/or white papers, for use in recruitment, educational, or awareness of programs, with guidance from supervisor.
- May orient and train new staff or students.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field.
- General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
- Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
