Overview

The Simulated Participants (SPs) are individuals trained to portray the roles of patients and/or embedded participants (EPs) to allow learners to practice performance-based skills in simulated environments, which are safe for both learners and SPs. SPs are trained to provide verbal feedback to learners.  To represent diverse patients (SPs) who learners will work with; SPs are hired from all genders with the widest age range possible from older adolescent to geriatric persons.

Simulated Participants (SPs) are used in clinical simulations to create realistic educational encounters with students and clinicians. Trainees gain valuable experience practicing and enforcing communication and physical exam skills.

• Knowledge of basic computer skills including email and ability to use web-based simulation and University specific software (Workday & Zoom).
• Ability, flexibility, and adaptability to portray various roles realistically.
• Ability to memorize case information, recall it accurately and appropriately multiple times in one session.
• Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work individually in monitored environments with learners.
• Ability to participate in group trainings with other SPs and professional SP Educators.

Physical Requirements (With or Without Accommodations):

• Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms, and other printed materials and information.
• Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication.
• Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions.
• Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending,
• Crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
• Ability to safely lift 15 pounds.
   

Work Environment:

• SP work is usually conducted indoors and is active.
• There are no harmful environmental conditions present for this job.
• The noise level in this work environment is usually moderate.
• SPs must be comfortable receiving physical exams from healthcare trainees

Required Skills and Abilities

• Must be agreeable to be examined by trainees of any gender.
• Realistic and accurate portrayal of scripted patients and/or embedded participants (EPs) to interact with learners.
• Must be reliable and punctual for assigned activities.
• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Must have regular, reliable access to a personal email account and have a working mobile phone number.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

• Experience in the field of acting or role-play
• Previous SP work in a simulated environment helpful but not required
• Experience/comfortable giving verbal feedback in for communication skill activities

Principal Responsibilities

1. Develops, provides, implements, and documents educational programs.  Creates and distributes related pamphlets and brochures.  2. Develops strong ties within target communities and across the University to assist in formulating and meeting health education needs. 3. Utilizes a variety of models and strategies to assess and evaluate learning.  Conducts program assessment and evaluation.  4. Partners collaboratively to identify, implement, and integrate short- and long-term change through project management and educational programming.  5. Provides educational consultation and assistance in monitoring of content, competency and knowledge transfer.  6. Complies with all regulatory and Joint Commission standards of education.  7. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree in a related field and three years of experience in direct education with adult learners in a healthcare educational environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
