Overview

Reporting to the Director of Veteran and Military Affairs (VetMil), provide critical project management and support for a number of key strategic initiatives.  Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Partner with VetMil colleagues to provide project support for department-wide strategic projects and management. 

  • Serve a key planning and implementation role in University-Wide events during the week of Veterans Day and for the Joint ROTC President’s Review and Commissioning Ceremony. Collaborate with university partners to ensure successful events, identify lessons learned, and conduct future project planning.  

  • Partner with colleagues and alumni volunteers on New Haven area veterans service organizations events and planning for VetMil role in reunions during May 2027. 

  • Participate in other communication project priorities of the VetMil director including website review and refresh, social media and communication campaign, including conducting data analysis of community and communication efforts.  

  • Be available for project coverage during intermittent leave of absences for VetMil staff.

Preferred Skills and Abilities

1. Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to convey complex concepts and to communicate with students, faculty, staff and community members in a manner that promotes dialogue and understanding. Skills in creating and conducting presentations and effective public speaking.  

2. Demonstrated ability to foster a supportive/student-centered environment, and to maintain a balanced perspective. Ability to advise students, showing good judgment about when to make referrals, set boundaries, and equip students with skills and strategies to engage in self-advocacy.

3. Organizational skills, including ability to prioritize, to respond to changing needs and circumstances, and to carry out multiple assignments in a timely fashion. 

4. Skill in independently researching questions and making appropriate contacts.

5. Experience effecting change; ability to build relationships and maintain trust, assess and balance the needs of various stakeholders, and identify and advocate for achievable solutions. Ability to identify and proactively respond to problems or emerging needs. Ability to balance needs of students with office and institutional objectives.

Preferred education and experience 

U.S. Military service and/or closely-related work experience. Experience in student affairs, project management, event planning, nonprofit organizations, communications or related field. Knowledge of VetMil and the University.

Principal Responsibilities

1. In support of the overall mission, plans, directs and oversees programmatic activities. 2. Develops, implements, and maintains operational policies and procedures. 3. Manages program communications; identifies outreach potential, and promotes philanthropic and collaborative support of the program. 4. Works closely with leadership, internal and external colleagues, and community residents to further develop and implement strategic plans. 5. Identifies, solicits, and cultivates community partnerships and collaborations to assist in the development and growth of the program. 6. Tracks all program activities and regularly informs leadership of progress on each initiative. Recommends structural or programmatic adjustments, changes or additions based on full knowledge of missions, goals, and objectives. Develops metrics to identify and measure the success of the program. 7. Assists in identifying and evaluating potential future funding sources, and contributes to the submission of grants and contracts supporting the program, including the annual submission and writing of all content areas and budgetary sections of grant applications. 8. Develops and manages the program's operating budget. 9. Manages the administrative infrastructure of the program. Manages human resources including staffing and hiring, supervision, performance development, counseling and discipline, if warranted. Oversees and manages information systems, facilities, and space needs. 10. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree in a related field and two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
