Occupational Health Nurse

As an Occupational Health Nurse, you'll help build safer workplaces and healthier communities through innovative occupational health programs, clinical care, regulatory compliance, and employee-focused wellness initiatives.
What You'll Do:
Promote Employee Health & Wellness
- Support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of occupational health and wellness programs for client organizations.
- Partner with employers and occupational health professionals to identify workforce health priorities and develop impactful wellness initiatives.
- Provide individualized health counseling and education related to screenings, health maintenance, and preventive care strategies.
Deliver Occupational Health Services
- Conduct pre-employment, post-offer, random, and regulatory drug and alcohol screenings.
- Perform occupational health nursing services including venipuncture, immunizations, injections, first aid, specimen collection, and health assessments.
- Maintain clinical equipment, supplies, and resources to support efficient, high-quality patient care.
Advance Workplace Safety
- Participate in workplace assessments to identify actual or potential health and safety risks.
- Assist in monitoring occupational exposures and environmental hazards utilizing occupational health principles and evidence-based practices.
- Support workplace surveillance programs and recommend strategies to reduce health risks and improve employee safety.
Ensure Compliance & Documentation Excellence
- Maintain accurate and confidential employee health records in accordance with regulatory and professional standards.
- Complete thorough documentation within electronic and paper medical record systems.
- Support compliance with OSHA, DOT, state, federal, and industry-specific occupational health regulations as applicable.
Collaborate Across Disciplines
- Work closely with physicians, industrial hygienists, safety professionals, managers, and employee representatives to support workplace health initiatives.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team discussions focused on improving employee health outcomes and workplace safety.
- Assist with program evaluation and continuous improvement efforts.
Commit to Professional Growth
- Remain current on occupational health nursing practices, industry regulations, and emerging workplace wellness trends.
- Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
- Support quality assurance activities related to clinical operations and equipment management.
What You'll Bring
Education
One of the following is required:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Diploma in Nursing from an accredited nursing program
Preferred:
- Coursework or training in occupational health, environmental health, occupational safety, public health, or a related discipline.
Licensure
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the State of North Carolina.
Experience
- Minimum of six months of nursing experience required.
- Occupational health, employee health, ambulatory care, emergency care, or wellness program experience preferred.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- First Aid and emergency response
- Injection administration
- Clinical documentation and medical records management
- Employee health and wellness education

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $64,280.00 to USD $101,343.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
