Description

The Pediatric ECMO/Research Fellowship is a one to two year clinical and research fellowship with multi-disciplinary mentorship from Pediatric Surgery, Neonatology, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Cardiac Intensivists and ECMO specialists.   

 

The fellow is responsible for co-management of all respiratory failure ECMO patients in the NICU and PICU.  They will learn the technical and physiologic aspects of advanced technology available in extracorporeal circuits.  They are an integral part of the pre-ECMO evaluation, cannulation, care during an ECMO run and decannulation.  The fellow will also lead ECMO M&M discussions, give ECMO in-service educational lectures and attend ECMO leadership meetings to learn key aspects of developing and maintaining an ECMO program.

 

The fellowship includes dedicated rotations in the NICU, PICU, cardiac ICU/perfusion, and with palliative care to become proficient in the physiology and clinical and ethical needs of these critically ill patients.  The fellow will also participate in ECMO simulations.  The fellow is expected to perform quality improvement and clinical research related to ECMO and surgical critical care.  The fellow will attend a national ECLS conference.     

 

This is a non-ACGME fellowship.  It is best suited for general surgery residents at the level of PGY-5 or greater who are interested in a career in pediatric surgery as well as post-graduate surgeons seeking an additional year of clinical experience and research in preparation for training in pediatric surgery.  The fellow has the opportunity to be part of daily pediatric surgery didactic conferences and will be responsible for taking senior pediatric surgery call.  There are multiple opportunities to participate in other pediatric surgery clinical outcomes research.  Multi-disciplinary summary evaluations will be provided to the fellow every 6 months.  Salary is commensurate with PGY level.  4 weeks of vacation will be provided.
