POSITION SPECIFICS

The Associate Athletic Director of Integrated Behavioral Health provides strategic leadership for a comprehensive, holistic model of psychological care within Intercollegiate Athletics. The Associate Athletic Director oversees a multidisciplinary team responsible for delivering clinical services, well-being programming, crisis response, education, and integrative care initiatives that support student-athletes’ mental, emotional, and relational health.

This role works collaboratively across Athletics, Sports Medicine, Academic Services, and campus partners to cultivate an environment where student-athletes can thrive as whole people—academically, personally, and athletically.

Strategic Leadership & Administration

  • Provide vision, leadership, and operational oversight for psychological health, clinical services, and well-being initiatives within Intercollegiate Athletics.
  • Develop and implement departmental goals aligned with University and ICA strategic priorities.
  • Oversee budgets, resource planning, and staffing to ensure quality and continuity of care.
  • Ensure timely, complete documentation of all clinical encounters — both personal and departmental — in the University's designated EMR system, consistent with clinical, licensure, and institutional standards.
  • Ensure departmental compliance with licensure requirements, clinical policies, and applicable regulatory and NCAA mental health best-practice expectations.
  • Recruit, supervise, and mentor clinical providers and well-being staff; promote a collaborative, team-centered culture.
  • Maintain all student-athlete clinical records and documentation exclusively within university-approved systems and on university-issued devices; personal or off-site storage of physical or electronic client records is not permitted.
  • Maintain systems for assessment, reporting, and continuous program improvement.

Clinical Care & Psychological Support

  • Oversee provision of evidence-based clinical services, including individual counseling, psychological assessment, crisis intervention, and case management for student-athletes.
  • Participate in and coordinate with multidisciplinary treatment teams (e.g., psychiatry, eating disorders, substance use, sports medicine).
  • Share in after-hours “on call” coverage for urgent student-athlete psychological needs.
  • Ensure coordinated care pathways and timely referrals to campus and community providers as appropriate.

Holistic Well-Being, Prevention & Education

  • Lead the development and delivery of programs that promote emotional health, resilience, adaptive coping, stress management, and interpersonal skills for student-athletes.
  • Provide education, consultation, and guidance to coaches, administrators, and staff regarding student-athlete well-being, team climate, and supportive communication strategies.
  • Develop proactive initiatives that contribute to healthy team cultures, life skills development, personal growth, and sustainable well-being.
  • Integrate prevention-based programming that supports early identification of mental health needs.

Collaboration & Integrated Care

  • Serve as a key partner with Sports Medicine, Academic Services, and campus health and wellness units to ensure seamless and coordinated care for student-athletes.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support a comprehensive, integrated model of psychological health.
  • Promote communication, shared planning, and collaborative decision-making across departments and care teams.

Critical Skills & Competencies

  • Significant experience providing clinical psychological services to high-performing or student populations.
  • Expertise in crisis intervention, consultation, and educational programming.
  • Strong judgment and discretion in managing sensitive, confidential, and complex situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, supervise staff, and cultivate a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to build rapport quickly with student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary environments.
  • High level of organization and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and culturally informed care.
  • Adherence to ethical, legal, and regulatory standards governing psychological practice.

Education & Certification Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) from an accredited psychology program.
  • Licensed in Pennsylvania, or licensed in another state and eligible for Pennsylvania licensure. Pennsylvania licensure must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Minimum of eight years of experience providing clinical counseling, psychological support, and/or well-being services, preferably in a higher education or health services setting.
  • Minimum of three years of experience directly supervising licensed or license-eligible clinical staff.
  • Experience working with student-athletes or within an athletics or university setting preferred.
  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) not required but may be considered an enhancement.
