Job Summary

This position will provide oversight and leadership of the creation of autonomous experimental workflows within the Manufacturing and Materials Research Laboratory to create alloy-carbide mixtures exhibiting paradigm-breaking high-temperature properties. The engineer will ensure that the laboratory will be nearly fully autonomous within three years and fully connected digitally to cloud-based simulation and metadata capture tools by collaborating with the AI/ML/digital team.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Provide project oversight and hands-on work for design, fabrication, and implementation of autonomous workflows
  • Operate equipment and perform experiments for internal and external user
  • Mentor postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students
  • Participate in weekly meetings, assist in writing/preparing reports

What We're Looking For:

Education and Experience:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s with 5 years of experience in manufacturing, robotics, or related fields
  • Equivalencies may be accepted (i.e. Associates and 8 years of experience, Master’s and 3 years of experience, or PhD and 1-2 years of experience)
  • Preferred: Master’s and 3 or PhD and 1-2 years of experience in manufacturing, robotics, or related fields 

 

Skills needed:

Ideal candidates will have experience in several of the following areas: Mechanical design, manufacturing and testing machine installation, operation, and maintenance, Materials synthesis or advanced manufacturing, Laboratory automation and robotics, Digital programming such as ROS, Unity, Isaac Sim, etc, High-throughput or autonomous experimentation, AI or machine learning for scientific research, Characterization of advanced materials, Ceramics, refractory alloys, 2D materials synthesis, including MAX phases and MXenes.
