The department of Genetics is looking for a Laboratory Assistant III.  In this hands-on laboratory position, you'll prepare media, plates, and solutions for multiple labs, ensuring researchers have the high-quality materials they need to conduct research. You'll master sterile techniques, work with specialized lab equipment including autoclaves and sterilization tools, and manage orders through our online systems.

Core Duties:

  • Under general supervision, responsible for planning, scheduling, and coordinating supporting lab operations and maintenance.
  • Ensure cleaning and maintenance of laboratory and equipment.
  • Comply with government and University health and safety policies and regulations.
  • Maintenance of lab records and APLAC protocols if relevant.
  • Maintain stock control and inventory of a variety of laboratory supplies and equipment, including keeping records, ordering, tracking down missing items, etc.
  • Determine lab supplies and reagents needed for experiments to be performed, order supplies to maintain stock control and inventory. May assure delivery to the appropriate lab(s) in a timely fashion.
  • Provide laboratory support services such as minor repairs and adjustments to student laboratory equipment, preparing classroom demonstrations. May perform such work personally, lead others in its performance, or order it done by outside sources
  • Perform routine equipment servicing, either performing the work or contacting appropriate outside contractor; keep service records.
  • Provide orientation and training on general lab procedures to students and staff; ensure that safety rules are followed.
  • Lead and/or coordinate the work of lower-level employees. Transmit instructions and specifications received from supervisor to workers; advise supervisor of work progress.
  • Assign and explain tasks, and train employees in the performance of their duties. Inspect work for conformance with specifications.
  • May perform any of the duties described in the Laboratory Assistant II specification or other duties as assigned.
  • Promote adherence to safety rules.
     

Minimum Education and Experience

In addition to the requirements of the Laboratory Assistant II, this position requires at least an additional year of experience in laboratory-related work a combination of equivalent education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • In addition to qualifications listed for the Laboratory Assistant II level, these employees must be able to coordinate and organize a variety of duties within general guidelines; they must be thoroughly familiar with various needs of a laboratory.
  • Must be able to establish good working relationships with a variety of professional, technical, and support staff and/or students.
  • Ability to train and/or lead employees.
