South Florida | Onsite Leadership Role

The University of Miami/UHealth department of Facilities has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Director, Space Planning to work at the UHealth Medical Campus.

The Director, Space Planning oversees the renovation and improvement of facilities by coordinating the development of new buildings and negotiating professional service contracts and leases. The Director, Space Planning’s goal is to maximize space in a way that meets institutional needs and objectives

Core Responsibilities:

  • Inspects physical structures and surrounding grounds, and spearheads remedial projects.

  • Coordinates custodial activities, landscaping, and building maintenance.

  • Delegates work assignments to assigned personnel and provides guidance, training, and general direction to staff.

  • Oversees all equipment, fixture, and furniture acquisitions and installations.

  • Collaborates with senior leadership and other vested parties to plan, develop, and implement safety and security issues.

  • Prepares reports detailing space trends and needs and generates recommendations to resolve issues.

  • Monitors projects to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and applicable policies, procedures, and standards.

  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.  Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Department Specific Functions

  • Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive space management strategy for the academic health campus, encompassing clinical, research, academic, and administrative facilities.

  • Provide data-driven space utilization analysis to guide short- and long-term space decisions. • Lead efforts in space inventory management, including data collection, analysis, reporting, and forecasting.

  • Establish space standards and guidelines for various space types: clinical, research, education, and administration.

  • Collaborate with Facilities, Real Estate, and Capital Planning teams to integrate space planning into broader campus and capital planning initiatives.

  • Support master planning and major capital projects by providing input on space programming and departmental adjacency requirements. Stakeholder Engagement & Management

  • Serve as the primary liaison for departments regarding space needs, allocations, renovations, and relocations working closely with in-house design team.

  • Facilitate space planning committees and governance processes to ensure transparency, consistency, and stakeholder input. Data Management & Reporting

  • Oversee the maintenance and accuracy of space inventory databases, floor plans, and space management systems (e.g., CAFM, IWMS).

  • Produce regular reports on space utilization, occupancy trends, and benchmarking metrics to inform leadership decision-making. Team Leadership

  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of space planners and analysts.

  • Establish performance metrics and ensure continuous professional development for staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:                                                                                                         

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Urban Planning, Facilities Management, or related field required preferably in a healthcare, academic or research-intensive environment.

  • Master’s degree in related discipline or MBA strongly preferred.

  • Minimum 7 years in space planning, facilities planning, or capital planning within a complex healthcare, higher education, or research environment.

  • Knowledge of business and management principles.

  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.

  • Ability to establish department goals and objectives that support the strategic plan.

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

  • Commitment to the University's core values.

  • Strong understanding of healthcare operations, medical education, and research space requirements.

  • Strong analytical skills with expertise in space utilization analysis and planning methodologies.

  • Proficiency in space management software ability to maintain a space inventory and utilization metrics (e.g., FAMIS, AutoCAD, Revit, GIS, etc.).

  • Exceptional communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complex governance and stakeholder environments.

  • Strategic thinker with a collaborative, customer-focused approach.

  • Experience with long-range facilities strategy, not just isolated project work.

  • Strong knowledge of applicable building codes, life safety, ADA, and FGI guidelines
