Job description

The University of Notre Dame is more than a workplace; it is a vibrant, mission-driven community where every employee is valued and supported. Rooted in a tradition of excellence and inspired by our Catholic character, Notre Dame is committed to fostering an environment of care that nurtures the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Here, you will find a deep sense of belonging, a culture that prioritizes well-being, and the opportunity to grow your career while being a force for good in the world. Whether contributing to world-class research, shaping the student experience, or supporting the University’s mission in other ways, you will be part of a dedicated team working to make a meaningful impact on campus and beyond. At Notre Dame, your work matters, and so do you!

Are you a dedicated professional ready to join a high-performing, collaborative team as the vital first link in campus safety?  We are seeking Communications Officers to serve as the heartbeat of our daily operations and the cohesive support nucleus for all campus emergency operations. In this role, you will perform a full range of emergency dispatch duties while working in unison with numerous divisions across campus to facilitate safety responses. If you are a motivated individual eager to provide compassionate service within a supportive team environment, we invite you to apply.

The Impact You Will Make:

  • Collaborative Crisis Response: You will be the first point of contact for the University community, triaging 9-1-1 and administrative calls while working in close proximity with team members to ensure seamless service.
  • Tactical Coordination: You will utilize radio communications to dispatch police, fire, and EMS, maintaining active tracking to ensure the safety of field units and supporting your colleagues during active incidents.
  • Data Integrity & Technical Support: You will serve as a technical resource, querying localized and national databases to provide critical information to patrol officers, ensuring team-wide data integrity within the CAD system.
  • Shared Safety Monitoring: You will monitor campus alarm systems and surveillance technology (CCTV) to collaboratively identify risks and support public safety operations.
  • Unified Community Engagement: You will provide premier customer service at our service window, assisting visitors and partnering with other University departments to solve problems.

Exciting University Benefits:

  • Starting Wage: Minimum $22.00/hour.
  • Dynamic Overtime Opportunities: Opportunities for additional income through voluntary and operational overtime, including behind-the-scenes access to major campus events, athletic games, concerts, and essential departmental coverage.
  • Retirement: 10% University gross wage contribution to 403(b) retirement fund.
  • Schedule: Innovative 4/3 schedule (10-hour shifts) with rotating weekends off.
  • Wellness: Comprehensive on-campus Wellness Center with low co-pay options.

Notre Dame Benefits and Compensation Link

Join a team where teamwork and belonging are at the core of how we protect our community.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Experience: 1 to 2 years of emergency dispatching or high-volume customer service experience is preferred but not required.
  • Education: A high school diploma or GED.
  • Team-Focused Traits: We are looking for individuals who can maintain calm in high-stress situations, possess strong multitasking abilities, strong typing/writing skills, and demonstrate a commitment to fostering comradery and mutual respect within the center.
  • Collaborative Proficiency: Ability to obtain IDACS and EMD certifications (through provided training) and a drive to work toward the shared vision of the agency.

Professional Development: We are committed to your success. As a Communications Officer, you will join a culture of continuous learning where you can master dispatch platforms and advance your career through peer mentorship and training.
