General

The Cockrell School of Engineering's Humanitarian Engineering Program empowers students to apply engineering solutions to real-world challenges facing underserved communities. Through multidisciplinary coursework and experiential learning opportunities, undergraduate students develop the knowledge and skills needed to create sustainable, community-centered impact.

Purpose

The Student Communications Specialist supports the Humanitarian Engineering Program's outreach and engagement efforts by helping connect current and prospective students with information about program offerings, courses, events, and opportunities. This role plays a key part in increasing student awareness and participation in the Humanitarian Engineering Program and Certificate.

Responsibilities

The Student Communications Specialist will collaborate with the Humanitarian Engineering Director and other student employees to develop and distribute communications materials that promote the program to current and prospective students, including those who are and are not enrolled in the Humanitarian Engineering Certificate.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Participate in weekly planning, brainstorming, and project update meetings.

  • Create and schedule approximately two social media posts per week highlighting program activities, events, courses, and student experiences.

  • Develop flyers, one-page promotional materials, email communications, and other marketing content.

  • Conduct outreach to student organizations, academic programs, and classes to increase awareness of Humanitarian Engineering courses and opportunities.

  • Deliver presentations about the Humanitarian Engineering Program at student organization meetings, classes, and campus events.

  • Support other communications and promotion efforts as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student in their second year or higher.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Creativity and the ability to develop engaging communications content.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Comfort with public speaking and presenting to groups.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of a core Humanitarian Engineering course (PUC or HPD).

  • Experience using Canva or similar graphic design software.

  • Experience creating content for Instagram and other social media platforms.

  • Pursuing or planning to pursue the Humanitarian Engineering Certificate.

  • Demonstrated interest in communications, marketing, outreach, or student engagement.

Hourly Rate

$15.00 per hour

Working Conditions

  • Standard office environment.

  • Extensive computer and keyboard use.
