POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Yiddish Studies. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. The successful candidate will be eligible to be named the Abraham and Malka Green Professor in Yiddish Studies for a three-year term, which will be renewable following a favourable review. The successful candidate will be jointly appointed to a Faculty of Arts & Science academic unit corresponding to their area of expertise (51%) and to the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies (49%).
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in the Humanities, with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching in Yiddish Studies with written and oral fluency in Yiddish. Candidates must have an established international reputation. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing institutional strengths.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, as demonstrated by an exceptional record of sustained scholarship, including a well-received book or books, articles in leading journals; the submitted research statement; presentations at significant conferences; awards and accolades; other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline; and strong endorsements from referees.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, documented in the teaching dossier (including the required materials outlined below).
RESPONSIBILITIES
Candidates will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
In addition, the successful candidate will be assigned a teaching and service load and will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate seminars in Yiddish.
HIRING SALARY RANGE
The rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The upper end of the salary range for this position exceeds $200,000 CAD per annum.
