LINC12H3 - Semantics: The Study of Meaning - Fall 2026

 

Course description: An introduction to the role of meaning in the structure, function, and use of language. Approaches to the notion of meaning as applied to English data will be examined.

Salary: In accordance with the current CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement, the rate of pay applicable for Sessional Instructional Assistants will be: $55.25/hour, excluding vacation pay.

Minimum Qualifications: PhD or ABD in Linguistics with a specialization in semantics or a closely related area. Applicants should have graduate-level training in semantics.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience as a Sessional Instructional Assistant for LINC12H3 or an equivalent course. Research experience in one or more areas relevant to the course, including lexical semantics, compositional semantics, reference and denotation, semantic relations and entailment, event/situation semantics and aspect, modality and evidentiality, thematic roles and argument structure, and the semantics–pragmatics interface.

 

 

Duties: Grading and other duties as assigned by the instructor.


Note: travel to the Scarborough campus for grading assignments/test/exams, and in-person invigilating is mandatory.
