Description:

Course number and title: MAT478H5F Topics in Mathematics (emergency post)

Course description: Introduction to a topic of current interest in mathematics. Content will vary from year to year. This course may include a tutorial and/or practical section in some years. The contact hours for this course may vary in terms of contact type (L, T) from year to year, but will be between 36-60 contact hours in total. See the UTM Timetable.

Estimated course enrolment: 25

Number of positions: 1 SIA

Size of appointment: 30 hrs

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2026 - December 31, 2026; Tutorials.

Salary: $55.25/hour + 4% vacation pay

Minimum qualifications: Strong grades in a minimum of 3.0 FCEs of mathematics courses, including at least 1.0 FCEs of primarily proof-based courses. Note that "MAT-like" courses offered in different departments do not count towards the FCE requirement as they do not adhere to the standards of rigour used in mathematics courses. In the alternative, applicants whose portfolio includes at least 2.0 FCEs of MAT specialist classes will be deemed to have satisfied the FCE requirement. The candidate must have strong grades and demonstrated knowledge of the course content and beyond; have a demonstrated record of commitment to teaching pedagogy and student learning; have a demonstrated record of timeliness in communication and carrying out duties; and possess excellent communication skills and professionalism.

Preferred qualifications: Teaching experience preferred

Relevant criterion: Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.

Description of duties: Will include some of the following: running tutorials, marking, invigilation, office hours, preparatory work, and other duties of administering the course.
