Job Summary:

Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive bereavement program for families whose children have died under the care of Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Delivers culturally responsive, developmentally appropriate bereavement support and education to families and staff. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to ensure consistent, high-quality end-of-life and bereavement care aligned with organizational standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops, coordinates, and manages hospital-wide bereavement services and initiatives

  • Provides bereavement outreach and follow-up to families and siblings for up to 15 months post-loss (often by phone and/or written communication)

  • Coordinates standardized end-of-life and bereavement practices across clinical areas

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams and serves as a subject matter expert

  • Develops and maintains bereavement resources and educational materials

  • Leads planning of bereavement events and memorial services

  • Maintains tracking systems for bereaved families and outreach

  • Provides education and consultation to staff on grief and loss

  • Ensures compliance with institutional policies and documentation standards

  • Contributes to quality improvement initiatives

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES

  • Risk Management (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate risk management of moderate difficulty. Capable of conducting risk analysis as part of a task to address problems including determining risk factors, probability, impact, early detection and prevention. Able to prepare simple contingency plans and alternatives.

  • QUALITY MANAGEMENT (Novice): Developing a systematic process of checking to see whether a process or service is meeting specific requirements.

  • COMPLIANCE (Novice): Understanding the rules, regulations, sanctions and other statutory requirements, guidelines and instructions relating to governing bodies and organizations, both internally and externally.

  • PATIENT OBSERVATION (Intermediate): Remains close to the bedside and calls for help immediately if any risk to the patient occurs. Prevents the patient from harming self or others and calls for assistance when necessary.
