Job descriptionContract

Verdacert provides USCIS-certified translations for MENA-region languages such as Arabic, Farsi, Dari, Pashto, Urdu, and Turkish, with every translation reviewed by a native-speaker reviewer before release. We're expanding our language coverage to include Japanese, and are looking for a Legal Japanese Translator to produce accurate, certification-ready English translations of legal and civil documents for use by immigration applicants, law firms, courts, universities, and other institutional clients.

What you'll do

  • Translate legal and civil documents from Japanese into English, including court records, contracts, affidavits, birth and marriage certificates, and academic transcripts
  • Review and edit machine-generated first-draft translations for accuracy, completeness, and faithfulness to the source document
  • Apply correct legal terminology and standard transliteration conventions for names, dates, and official registry information
  • Sign certification statements attesting to the accuracy and completeness of each translation, consistent with USCIS requirements under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)
  • Preserve original document layout and formatting in the translated output
  • Meet defined turnaround windows, including rush and same-day requests when needed

What we're looking for

  • Native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English
  • Demonstrated experience translating legal, court, or immigration-related documents
  • Strong understanding of Japanese civil registry documents (koseki, family registers) and legal terminology
  • Familiarity with certified translation standards and certification statement requirements
  • High attention to detail, particularly with names, dates, and numerical data
  • Ability to work within defined deadlines across multiple concurrent documents

Nice to have

  • Prior experience as a certified or sworn translator
  • Background in immigration law, paralegal work, or court interpreting
  • Experience translating patent, IP, or academic transcript documents
