Verdacert is a US-based certified translation service specializing in MENA-region documents for USCIS filings, US courts, universities, and medical providers, with every translation reviewed by a native speaker before release. We're expanding our reviewer network to cover additional languages, including Portuguese, and are looking for a Legal Portuguese Translator to translate and certify civil and legal documents for immigration and court use.
What you'll do
- Translate legal and civil documents from Portuguese into English, including birth certificates, marriage records, court documents, academic transcripts, and related filings
- Review and edit machine-generated first-draft translations for accuracy, completeness, and faithfulness to the source document
- Sign a formal certification statement attesting to the accuracy of each completed translation, in line with 8 CFR § 103.2(b)(3) requirements
- Apply correct transliteration conventions for names, dates, and proper nouns per client filing needs (e.g., matching immigration form spellings)
- Preserve original document layout and formatting in the final certified deliverable
- Meet defined turnaround windows, including standard, rush, and same-day delivery commitments
What we're looking for
- Native or near-native fluency in Portuguese and English
- Demonstrated experience translating legal, civil, or immigration-related documents
- Strong working knowledge of certified translation standards and certification statement requirements for USCIS or similar bodies
- Excellent attention to detail, particularly with names, dates, numbers, and official terminology
- Ability to work within firm deadlines across multiple documents and formats (PDF, JPG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF)
- Comfort working within a digital document review and certification workflow
Nice to have
- Familiarity with Brazilian and European Portuguese document conventions and regional variants
- Prior experience translating for immigration attorneys, courts, or academic institutions
- Background in legal, paralegal, or court interpreting work
