Job descriptionReq 8179114

Ready to do the most impactful work of your career? At Coinbase, we are uncompromising on our mission to increase economic freedom. The bar is high, the environment is intense, and we like it that way. This isn't a place for complacency, it’s a place to be pushed past your perceived limits. If you're ready to build the future of finance alongside people who refuse to settle for "good enough," you belong here. Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Expect to get together quarterly for intense in-person working sessions called “surges.” learn more about working at Coinbase.

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Exchange team within the Institutional product group, you'll build and operate the real-time trading systems that power Coinbase's institutional exchange - matching engines, order management, market data, and funding rate computation. This team owns the core infrastructure that clears billions of dollars in daily volume for the world's largest financial institutions. You'll write performance-critical code, own system reliability end to end, and ship features that directly expand Coinbase's trading capabilities.

What you'll do:

  • Build and operate low-latency, event-sourced trading systems spanning matching, order entry, risk, and market data across cloud and colocated environments.
  • Own the reliability and correctness of production systems processing high-throughput financial data 24/7, including incident response and failover design.
  • Partner with Product, Infrastructure, and senior engineering leadership to translate strategy into quarterly deliverables and well-scoped milestones.
  • Drive technical design decisions within your domain, producing clear proposals and building consensus with peers and tech leads.
  • Write high-quality, well-tested code in a performance-critical backend environment (Java, C++, or Go), with a focus on latency and throughput.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, with hands-on ownership of production trading, exchange, or financial infrastructure systems at scale.
  • Deep proficiency in a backend language such as Java, C++, or Go, with experience in JVM or Linux performance tuning for latency-sensitive workloads.
  • Track record designing and operating highly reliable distributed systems processing high volumes with strict correctness and uptime requirements (24/7).
  • Experience partnering with Product and cross-functional teams to scope and deliver complex technical projects on clear timelines.
  • Genuine interest in crypto and institutional markets, with the ability to ramp quickly; deep crypto experience is a plus, not a requirement.
  • Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Pay Transparency Notice: Depending on your work location, the target annual base salary for this position can range as detailed below. Total compensation may also include bonus eligibility and benefits (including medical, dental, vision and 401(k)).

Annual base salary range (excluding bonus):
$186,065$218,900 USD
