Wanted: Colonist Product Developer Intern

Working Hours: We work asynchronously and value outcomes over hours

Location: Fully Remote

Disclaimer: We review applications for this position once a month

About Colonist

We're building the biggest digital board game platform on the internet. Last year, our players spent 3,037 years playing 60 million games on our Settlers of Catan alternative. We're a fully remote, asynchronous team spread across multiple continents, focused on crafting extremely polished digital board games that people truly love.

About The Role

As a Product Developer Intern at Colonist, your mission is to work closely with our game team to solve complex product problems and build engaging game modes, ensuring seamless UI/UX across platforms. You'll learn how high-quality games and products are actually built and help shape a game that reaches millions of players.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and improve game UI and UX, with a strong focus on clarity, polish, and fun

  • Contribute to new game modes, features, and gameplay experiences

  • Turn product ideas into working features used by real players

  • Work across the stack as needed

  • Collaborate asynchronously with product teams

  • Learn how to ship, iterate, and improve features based on real player behavior

Requirements

  • AI first-mindset. We see AI fluency as a real multiplier

  • Currently enrolled in a college course, preferably software development related

  • Available for a mid to long-term commitment (this is not a summer-only internship)

  • You enjoy building projects from start to finish

  • You care about user experience, not just the code

  • Motivated by solving challenging problems

  • Interested in board games

Nice to Have

You don’t need to check all of these boxes.

  • JavaScript / TypeScript

  • Git and version control

  • Side projects, prototypes, or experiments (finished or unfinished)

Our Values at Colonist

We strongly adhere to these values in our team - if these resonate, then you’ll love working here!

Dependability

We're self-driven players who deliver without needing supervision. When we commit to something, we make it happen.

Ownership

We take full responsibility and go beyond our roles to improve Colonist.

Clear Communication

In our remote environment, written communication is key. We're direct, structured, and always keep our team in the loop.

Efficient Execution

We move fast and focus on impact. Instead of getting stuck on perfect solutions, we find practical ways forward and get things done.

Continuous Learning

We're curious problem solvers who love a challenge. We constantly seek new ideas, embrace feedback, and aren't afraid to change our minds when we're wrong.

Compensation

  • Competitive scholarship paid in USD

Why Colonist

  • Your work ships to 3,6M+ yearly active players

  • Async culture; deep work, no performative meetings

  • Unlimited vacation, yearly team offsite, full work equipment

  • Budget to experiment with any AI tool you want

  • Access to all company metrics and internal discussions

What applying to Colonist usually looks like

Based on publicly available information, candidates applying through Ashby can generally expect a structured and relatively streamlined digital application process, typically beginning with an online submission that includes a resume and possibly a cover letter or screening questions. For roles like devops-engineer and qa-engineer, candidates may encounter technical assessments or take-home tasks in addition to standard interviews, while general-application submissions are commonly reviewed against future openings rather than a specific role. The process may include multiple stages, such as recruiter screens, hiring manager conversations, and technical or team interviews, though the exact structure can vary by position and team needs. Response times vary depending on the volume of applicants and internal hiring timelines. Candidates should prepare materials that clearly reflect relevant experience, as Ashby-based systems often emphasize structured, criteria-driven evaluation throughout the hiring process.
