Duke University Hospital's Emergency Department is now accepting applications to the Specialty Nurse Intern Program (SNIP) for the February/March 2027 Cohort!

 

Specialty Nurse Intern Program (SNIP)

This specialized training program at Duke University Hospital is for new graduate nurses interested in an Emergency Department career. It puts nurses in a structured, 26-week orientation that provides extensive clinical exposure combined with classroom lectures to help nurses better understand emergency services. A team of preceptors supports Specialty Nurse Intern Program (SNIP) trainees and engagement and support extend well beyond the formal six-month active program.

 

  • Required Program Start Date: February/March 2027 (RN license required before this date)
  • This position is seeking: December 2026 Nursing School Graduates
  • Application will be open from August 14, 2026 - September 30, 2026
  • ​Virtual interviews for this position will be held on: October 20, 2026 12pm - 4pm EST (By invitation only following a phone screen.)  This is the ONLY day to interview.


Department Profile: The Emergency Department at Duke University Hospital comprises 81 total beds, including 11 Pediatric beds, 55 Adult Monitored beds, 5 Fast Track Beds, 4 Triage rooms, 1 Sexual Assault Examiner Room/ 4 Resus Rooms, and a dedicated central telemetry station. 

 

Work Hours & Shifts: 

Full Time: Days (7a-7p) OR Nights (7p-7a)


Nurse Residency Program:
  Every new graduate nurse who joins us is automatically enrolled in the 12-month paid program that mixes both foundational and specialty education in 13 tracks. With guidance from dedicated nurse educators, participants gain hands-on training and didactic instruction that strengthens clinical skills, reinforces decision-making, and promotes confidence at the bedside all while forming lasting professional relationships. 

  • All New Graduate RN/Clinical Nurse I's will be enrolled in and must complete the DUHS Nurse Residency Program within 12 months of hire.
  • New Graduate RN/Clinical Nurse I's are required to meet criteria set forth by the DUHS Nurse Residency Program within 18 months of hire to be promoted to CNII.

 

Job Summary:   As a Clinical Nurse with Duke University Health System, you will make providing service your priority while caring for the whole person in a patient-centered atmosphere. The Clinical Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing and supervising direct and indirect total nursing care responsibilities. Utilizing the nursing process (assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating) in achieving the goals of the nursing department. Plan and provide advanced and/or specialized nursing care for patients in guided by DUHS Professional Practice model participate in the clinical ladder program, educational activities, departmental committees, research projects or other health related projects as assigned. Provide nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Adheres to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Education, and Experience Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher), Associate's Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma program is required.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are encouraged to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date but must complete the program within seven years of their start date.

 

Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:

  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required by start date.
  • BLS (or higher) certification required.
  • Professional specialty certification (preferred)
