INDG 400 Black-Indigenous Alliances

There is a long history of ties between Indigenous peoples and people of African descent in Canada and across the Americas. The Black enslaved worked alongside Indigenous panis slaves in Quebec, and in Nova Scotia, descendants of African American loyalists lived alongside members of the Mi’kmaw nation. There is also a longstanding relationship between African and

Indigenous peoples in wider Americas, including in the Caribbean, the region where most people of African descent in Canada have roots. Today many Black Nova Scotians, including those living in Montreal, claim Mi’Kmaw ancestry, and in the 1960s, signifi cant efforts were made to forge an Indigenous-Black solidarity movement. As recent work on the subject shows, these efforts were disrupted by Canadian state security in collaboration with its U.S. counterpart. Today the issue of settler colonialism and who qualifi es as a settler has raised pointed questions about the place on non-Indigenous peoples on this territory, including people of African descent.

What applying to McGill University usually looks like

Based on publicly available information, candidates applying through Workday can typically expect a structured online application process that may involve creating a candidate profile, uploading a resume, and manually entering work history and education details, which can sometimes duplicate resume content. Given the broad range of roles—spanning healthcare, academic, administrative, and facilities positions—screening criteria likely vary by department. The process may include multiple stages, such as initial recruiter review, hiring manager evaluation, and possibly skills or competency-based interviews depending on the role. Applicants can generally expect to receive automated confirmation emails upon submission, though response times vary and follow-up communication is not guaranteed. Candidates are commonly advised to tailor application materials to each posting and ensure consistency between resume and profile entries, as Workday systems often parse this information for initial screening purposes.

Based on publicly available information. LandEarly does not verify interview process details.
