Job description

About the Opportunity

Northeastern University is seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to lead computational modeling efforts investigating the effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields on the human nervous system. Working under the direction of Prof. Yarossi, this position will lead the development of realistic head models, tissue segmentation pipelines, and E-field simulations, as well as biophysical neuron modeling. The Research Scientist will collaborate closely with the Northeastern Center for Translational Neuroimaging and will supervise a Research Engineer and graduate student supporting the project.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the creation of realistic head models for E-field simulation, including development of computational modeling pipelines.
  • Conduct numerical simulations of neural activity using point models, cable models, and neural mass models.
  • Implement biophysically realistic, multi-compartment neuron models to estimate electromagnetic field effects on neural tissue.
  • Supervise and mentor the Research Engineer and graduate student on computational modeling tasks.
  • Contribute to technical reporting, manuscript preparation, and dissemination of findings.

Education/Experience:

  • PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in computational modeling of electromagnetic fields in biological tissue and/or neuron modeling.

Skills:

  • Experience with E-field simulation platforms such as SimNIBS, Sim4Life, CST Studio Suite, or ANSYS HFSS.
  • Experience with neuron modeling software such as NEURON, or with neural mass modeling approaches.
  • Strong background in numerical methods, biophysical modeling, and simulation of neural dynamics.
  • Prior experience modeling the effects of electromagnetic fields on biological tissue strongly preferred.
  • Ability to independently lead technical work and mentor junior staff.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills for scientific reporting and publication.

In compliance with federal government contract requirements, U.S. citizenship is required for this role. Security clearance is not required.

What applying to Northeastern University usually looks like

Based on publicly available information, candidates applying through Workday for roles at Northeastern University can generally expect a structured online application requiring creation of a candidate profile, resume upload, and completion of standardized questionnaires covering work history, education, and voluntary self-identification disclosures. Given the breadth of roles posted, from technical and research positions to operations and campus services, the process may include multiple stages such as recruiter screening, hiring manager conversations, and possibly panel or department-level interviews depending on seniority. Applicants commonly encounter automated status updates within the Workday portal, though response times vary and may depend on requisition volume. Some roles may also require submission of supplemental materials like references, transcripts, or writing samples. Candidates should typically ensure their profile is complete and consistent, as Workday systems often rely on structured data fields for initial screening.
