A postdoctoral researcher appointment is available in the Carpenter Spectroscopy Group (https://www.carpentergroup.site/) in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at The Ohio State University. The postdoctoral researcher will perform independent experiments in single-molecule and single-particle optical spectroscopy, centered around the heterogeneity and chemical dynamics of biological nanocompartments. The researcher will work independently on research projects decided on jointly by the postdoctoral fellow and the PI and is expected to generate data and insights for scientific publication and presentation at professional meetings.

 

As a member of a recently established lab, duties will also consist of establishing single-particle microscopy and spectroscopy experiments, including sample preparation protocols and benchmarking of optical spectrometers and anti-Brownian traps designed for single-particle and single-molecule measurements. The individual will also assist with the general development of the lab, including assisting with funding proposals and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in sample preparation protocols, optical techniques, data analysis, and scientific communication. Minimum Education Required

PhD in chemistry, physics, biomedical engineering, or other related discipline.

 

Required Qualifications

Past graduate or postdoctoral experience in spectroscopy and imaging in molecular systems, as demonstrated by scientific publications in the field. Required skills include operation and alignment of custom laser instrumentation, and programming experience in e.g. MATLAB/Python/LabVIEW for data analysis and software experimental control.

 

Also required are strong written and oral communications skills, interpersonal skills for collaborative science and mentorship, problem-solving skills, ability to learn new research techniques, and ability to generate new research ideas.
