Overview of Assistant Facilities and Grounds Manager

The Assistant Manager for Building Services, Facilities Maintenance, Grounds, and General Services supports the operational leadership and daily coordination of facility-related functions for the Purdue University Northwest Westville campus. This position assists in ensuring that campus buildings, mechanical systems, grounds, and general service operations are maintained to high standards of safety, cleanliness, functionality, and appearance.

Budgeted Salary: up to $60,000

Duties and Responsibilities of Assistant Facilities and Grounds Manager

  • Provide administrative supervision to Building Services staff, including reviewing, prioritizing, and assigning projects, work requests, and preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Monitor progress and ensure timely completion of all work orders.
  • Oversee departmental workflow and guide the Building Services team to ensure efficient operations and high-quality work completion.
  • Conduct regular inspections of buildings, classrooms, event spaces, and equipment to assess safety, cleanliness, and operational condition. Identify deficiencies and direct staff on corrective actions.
  • Follow up with customers and staff to ensure expectations are met.
  • Communicate daily expectations, responsibilities, and performance standards to Building Services staff.
  • Ensure proper staffing levels and scheduling for classes, events, and general campus coverage.
  • Collaborate with the Facilities and Grounds Manager to establish and maintain standards for quality, customer service, and operational performance.
  • Promote staff development through on‑the‑job coaching, mentorship, and formal training opportunities.
  • Review and monitor the Building Services budgets for Westville.  
  • Review and submit invoices in accordance with established policy and procedure. 
  • Respond or call staff for campus emergencies and inclement weather needs.
  • Call out or schedule appropriate staff for snow and ice management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Direct, maintain, and enforce safety programs to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, requirements, and building codes.
  • Serve as the Facilities and Grounds Manager in the absence of the primary manager.
  • Participate in the recruitment, search, and selection process for all Facilities staff at the Westville campus.
  • Set clear performance expectations for department managers, team leaders, and staff regarding work quality, campus appearance, and operational standards.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations for all direct reports within the Building Services Department.
  • Address and report disciplinary matters involving Building Services staff at the Westville campus.

Education of Assistant Facilities and Grounds Manager

  • High School/GED
  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree is preferred

Experience of Assistant Facilities and Grounds Manager

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience managing Maintenance or Facilities in an institutional or commercial environment.  

Core Competencies

  • Experience with personnel management
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of central heating and cooling plants
  • troubleshooting skllls
  • Knowledge of basic grounds care
