Administrative Director, Center for Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity

This position has been deemed critical by the School of Humanities and Sciences Dean’s Office and is exempt from the hiring freeze.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid work schedule (at least 3 days per week on-site).  

Budgeted Salary: $115,000-$128,000 per annum

The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 24 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. Department/Program Description: The Center for Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity (CCSRE) is Stanford’s hub for teaching and research on race and ethnicity. CCSRE is a community composed of faculty, students, alumni, and staff dedicated to promoting the interdisciplinary and comparative understanding of race and ethnicity in the United States and throughout the diaspora through innovative research and teaching. CCSRE includes over 150 affiliated faculty, 75 declared undergraduate students, 3 faculty fellows, 10 graduate fellows, and 7 core staff. CCSRE houses the Undergraduate and PhD Minor Programs in Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity (CSRE) and the Research Institute of Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity (RICSRE). Across its courses, programs, and events, CCSRE supports students and faculty in the study of how race and ethnicity matter in our everyday lives and systemically shape our institutions and society. CCSRE students and scholars approach questions of difference, inequality, and inclusion from dynamic interdisciplinary, comparative, and multiracial/multiethnic perspectives.

Position Summary: CCSRE is seeking an experienced, motivated, and team-oriented individual to lead the Center’s administrative functions. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Administrative Director is responsible for working with the CCSRE leadership team on short- and long-range planning and day-to-day operational functions, including oversight of the finance, faculty affairs, student services, human resources, programming and events, research administration, facilities, IT support, and health and safety. 

In particular, the Administrative Director:

  • Manages all fiscal operations for CCSRE, including managing annual strategic budget planning and producing detailed project budgets for the coming year; analyzing quarterly variance reports and developing forecasts; and developing and managing effective budget control, reporting and planning processes; anticipating and identifying potential budgetary problems and recommending appropriate courses of action to Center directors and program chairs. 
  • Manages all human resources activities, including the hiring process for non-academic and academic staff and oversees all aspects of the Center’s HR transactions. 
  • Supports the development and coordination of event and program budgets, logistics, and publicity; ensures appropriate staffing support for events and programs and oversees events and programs, as needed. 
  • Works with the Executive Director to supervise, mentor, and develop the Center’s full-time and temporary administrative staff and requires strong organizational and management skills. 
  • Ensures compliance with all school and university policies and procedures related to operations, personnel, events, and program management. 
  • Manages the facilities.

 

The Administrative Director is a key support position for the Center. The successful candidate requires facility in working within and across its multiple components and works closely with faculty and staff across CCSRE. They regularly provide support for the Center’s leadership team, National Advisory Board, and a wide range of people from across the university. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to foster a congenial and productive team environment; be service-oriented and enthusiastic about research and teaching of the Center; and be able to meet the diverse needs of the faculty, students and staff.

  • Significant progressively responsible administrative management experience in an academic environment, including experience supporting interdepartmental programs and research centers
  • Proficiency with networking and collaborating with people in diverse roles and positions
  • Experience supporting research and teaching on race and ethnicity 
     

 

Core Duties:

  • Independently implement, administer and evaluate day-to-day activities of the unit, function or program by identifying and executing tasks and objectives, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and assigning resources to achieve the goals of the program.

  • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program or function.

  • Analyze and interpret policies; develop, revise and implement procedures for program or function.

  • Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within the department, unit or school. Commit resources and provide information and/or training. May also represent the program or function to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.

  • Organize and/or participate in outreach activities that may include developing communications and training, planning/promoting events and/or conferences.

  • May participate in development of budgets, monitor, and approve expenditures. May perform limited forecasting and provide recommendations that determine the budget.

  • May direct staff to perform various tasks and assignments. May also supervise staff.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
