The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has an exciting full-time position for a Senior Research Associate 3 in Miami, Florida.

The Senior Research Associate 3 supports research activities under the direction of a principle investigator, program director or designee of the principle investigator or program director.

• Contributes to basic and applied research activities by collecting and analyzing data, maintaining databases etc...
• Understands and interprets research protocols and procedures
• Participates in the publication of significant results, to include authorship of scientific monographs
• Advances expertise through continued education, training and/or research.
• Maintains an overview of relevant research findings.
• Ensures all research is undertaken according to good research practice and guidance.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience work related experience including significant evidence of research productivity such as publications, presentation, or a tangible contributory role in grants. 

  • Supervisory experience preferred.

  • The appointee should have a strong research background (preparation of research protocols, publications, presentations, and posters) in optics and ophthalmology.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.

  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.

Department Specific Functions

  • The Ophthalmic Biophysics Center at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has a career opportunity for a Senior Research Associate 3.  This position has primary responsibilities for the development of complex opto-mechanical and electronic instrumentation that will be used for ocular imaging and biometry.

  • The appointee will be responsible for the design and execution of research duties required for the Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy Project, a novel treatment modality for treating corneal infections.  

  • The appointee will be responsible for the development, calibration and validation of novel imaging systems for the study of accommodation.  

  • The position requires a strong engineering background in optics with foundations and familiarity with various engineering software (i.e. MATLAB, SolidWorks, LabVIEW, etc.). 

  • IRB and ACUC CITI certification required within the first 30 days of employment.

  • Prior laboratory experience (>5 years) in the development and implementation of procedures and instrumentation for ophthalmic clinical applications.

  • Candidate must have extensive knowledge in the terminologies and anatomy of the eye. 

  • Experience in the training of engineering and medical students is preferred.

  • Established researcher as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in quality journals, conference abstracts, presentations, and posters within the fields of Ophthalmology and Engineering.  The candidate will be required to present scientific findings in multiple national and international conferences and seminars.

  • Conducts meetings with the research faculty, staff, and students and ensures functions are coordinated in a timely and accurate manner according to established guidelines.

  • Responsible for support of various research projects and solving any concerns/issues/problems as they arise.

  • Monitors and ensures good data acquisition and data management processes.

  • The appointee will be responsible for assisting the principle investigator in submitting grant proposals to various funding mechanisms and agencies.

  • The appointee will be responsible for implementing human research study protocols.

  • The appointee will be responsible for updating our collaborators on the progress of various ongoing research projects.
