About the opportunity
The university's ICT department is embarking on an exciting transformation. This change aims to align with the University's 2032 Strategy and further enhance its service delivery in accordance with its vision and foster engaging career development opportunities.
The Site Reliability Engineer provides expertise in maintaining operational coverage of services and functions offered through the University’s cloud compute and storage environments including research infrastructure. Focus includes optimisation of cost and performance, incident and request fulfilment, security, automation, scale, metric collection and visibility into production health.
Drives continuous improvement using feedback loops, by learning new technologies and services, driving process improvements and ensuring knowledge is transferred effectively. Works collaboratively with university staff, researchers, developers and vendors and uses business-driven and agile methods to deliver support solutions and continuously improve operating costs and performance. Has expertise in scripting automation, networking, cloud tool sets, system engineering and administration. Identifies issues with automation and support operational elements.
Advocates and influences stakeholders in the adoption of new technologies, process and cultural changes. Engages ICT teams to deliver innovative and automated solutions whilst maintaining currency of the University’s systems through managing server lifecycle.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
constantly works with managed service providers, vendors and other external entities to ensure that outcomes will deliver services based on principles of continuous service improvement
undertake a hands-on role supporting application environments and research infrastructure, ensuring timely and effective response to users’ needs, including prioritisation and resolution of requests and incidents
reduce cloud sprawl by focusing on adopting and implementing cloud native automation in consultation with vendors and Automation Engineers
support analysis of metric-based monthly reports on capacity, cost and performance
identify excessive provision of services in a real time manner, so that prompt action can be taken to reduce the level provisioned, to minimise cost to the University
keep abreast of contemporary IT industry trends, primarily as they relate to cloud solutions and automation.
About you
tertiary qualifications in a relevant field (i.e. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a relevant field) or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Public Cloud certification at the associate level in any of the public cloud environment (Azure, AWS or GCP)
previous experience in the higher education/tertiary sector or at a complex multi-faceted organisation
experience with public cloud technology such as AWS and Azure and related platform toolsets
demonstrated Ability to manage competing priorities often with limited resources, including flexibility and adaptability to respond to situational requirements and working independently
knowledge of project management principles and methodologies with experience in managing small projects or major tasks
highly developed communication skills with the sound interpersonal skills necessary to promote, facilitate and achieve effective coordination of cross disciplinary support teams and cooperation among peers.
