Job description

About Us

Insurance is one of the largest industries in the world, and it still runs on manual work nobody wants to do. Claims is the clearest case: high-volume, repetitive workflows handled over the phone, by email, and across 200-page PDFs, most of it sitting in systems built in the early 2000s. Software has circled this problem for decades without touching the core of it, because nothing could make the calls or read the documents. AI finally can. Avallon builds agents that run the full claims lifecycle, from intake to settlement, so teams can move faster, eliminate busywork, and get more right.

Out of YC we went from zero to seven figures of ARR in twelve months, and are now growing 3X quarter over quarter while working with some of the largest carriers in the world. Avallon is backed by top investors, and our founding team includes builders from MIT, Harvard, and Cornell. We aim to become the automation layer for the entire insurance industry, and we intend to get there with a talent-dense team where everyone is enabled to do the best work of their careers. No one can predict the future of insurance, so we're building it.

The Role

We're looking for an exceptional Product Engineer. You'll build the platform that lets insurance teams put AI to work on real operations, and trust it when it matters. Your job is to find what the platform needs next and build it.

Our forward-deployed engineers run customer deployments on top of the platform. You build the platform itself. Working closely with them, design, and customers, you'll spot the hard problems that keep coming up and turn them into product: the smallest version that creates value now and extends cleanly later.

What You'll Work On

  • Shape the product from the start. You come in early, working with customers, design, and product strategy to decide what gets built and why, not picking up tickets after the decisions are made.

  • Build the rails insurance will run on. From public chat interfaces where claimants report and follow their claims, to branded portals our largest carrier customers host on Avallon, you build the surfaces the industry will soon run on.

  • Help teams confidently automate more. Build clear, auditable claim context and the experiences that let people review and approve agent work, giving teams control where it matters and letting them expand automation with confidence.

  • Own it end to end, in production. Build the whole flow yourself, from data model to backend to interface, then own how it performs: instrument it, watch how real users move through it in Datadog RUM, and keep pushing it as more teams rely on it.

The work is broad, and your impact will grow wherever the platform needs you most. You will take on a meaningful challenge, ship it quickly, watch what changes in production, and go again.

You

  • You have 3+ years building and owning meaningful software in production. You can point to a difficult challenge you solved or a system you built that changed what was possible, explain the judgment behind it, and answer for the outcome once it was live.

  • You are a full-stack product engineer who builds whole flows yourself. TypeScript and SQL are your working tools; you design the data model and backend as readily as the interface on top of it. You work closely with design and product strategy, have opinions about what to build, and can explain them clearly. This is not a frontend-only role.

  • You have built and operated LLM- or agent-powered products in production, and understand the challenges of making them reliable at scale.

  • You want to be in the room. This role is in person in New York.

Nice to Have

  • You know insurance, claims, or another regulated operational domain where reliability and traceability matter.

  • You have worked as a product manager, or owned product decisions and roadmap in a similar role.

  • You have worked at an early-stage company.

  • You have been a founder or founding engineer.

A Few Things We Believe In

  • Eating well: We provide lunch and dinner every workday from local restaurants.

  • Health & Wellness: Your health is on us. We cover 100% of medical, dental, and vision premiums, offer up to $17,000 toward fertility and family-forming through Carrot, and give you a monthly gym stipend to stay active.

  • Getting out of the office together to recharge: quarterly offsites somewhere you actually want to go.

  • And our favorite: unlimited token budget. No caps, no rationing. Build with whatever makes you fastest.
