Duke Health is seeking an experienced and collaborative Interior Design Services Manager to lead interior planning and design initiatives across our healthcare facilities. This role combines interior design expertise, project management, and team leadership to create environments that support exceptional patient care, operational efficiency, and an outstanding experience for patients, visitors, and staff.

 

The Interior Design Services Manager oversees a team of interior design professionals and leads a diverse portfolio of renovation, relocation, refresh, and facility improvement projects from concept through completion. This position works closely with clinical and administrative leaders, architects, engineers, contractors, and Facilities Operations staff to deliver high-quality, functional, and aesthetically appropriate healthcare environments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • NCIDQ certification or other relevant professional certifications.
  • Project Management training or certification.
  • Five (5) or more years of interior design and/or interior project management experience.
  • Healthcare, higher education, or commercial design experience preferred.
  • Commercial furniture dealership experience strongly preferred.
  • Interior planning, space utilization, and workplace design.
  • Project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and execution.
  • Team leadership and stakeholder relationship management.
  • Knowledge of healthcare design considerations, codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, Enscape, CET, Bluebeam, Microsoft Project, and project management platforms.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education - Bachelor's degree. Additional training in Project Management coursework or certification in Project Management is desired.

 

Experience – Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in project management, including complex projects involving multiple functional groups. 

 

Experience in medical education/publishing, clinical research, or medical product development is desired.

What You'll Do

 

Lead and Manage Interior Design Projects

 

  • Direct interior renovation, relocation, refresh, and facility improvement projects across Duke Health facilities.
  • Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and implementation plans.
  • Coordinate project activities with architects, engineers, contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Monitor project progress and proactively manage risks, budgets, and timelines.

 

Lead the Interior Design Team

 

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and direction for the interior design team.
  • Assign projects, manage workloads, and establish priorities to support organizational needs.
  • Foster collaboration, professional development, and high-quality project execution.

 

Shape Healthcare Environments

 

  • Develop innovative interior planning solutions that support patient care, staff efficiency, and operational effectiveness.
  • Create space plans, finish palettes, furniture standards, and design specifications.
  • Maintain and apply organizational design standards and branding requirements.
  • Evaluate space utilization and recommend improvements to maximize functionality and user experience.

 

Partner with Stakeholders

 

  • Consult with department leaders, clinicians, and end users to understand project needs and goals.
  • Present design concepts, recommendations, budgets, and implementation strategies.
  • Build strong relationships across the organization to ensure successful project outcomes.

 

Manage Furniture, Fixtures & Equipment (FF&E)

 

  • Coordinate the selection and procurement of furnishings, finishes, fixtures, artwork, and related interior elements.
  • Develop and manage FF&E budgets and replacement plans.
  • Work with vendors and suppliers to ensure quality, performance, and compliance with organizational standards.

 

Support Construction and Project Implementation

 

  • Coordinate installation and implementation activities with contractors and internal trades.
  • Conduct site visits, inspections, punch-list reviews, and occupancy planning activities.
  • Ensure completed projects align with approved plans, quality standards, and user expectations.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $79,456.00 to USD $127,090.00. Duke University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position; candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills; internal peer equity; as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
