An overview of this role

As a Senior Fullstack Engineer on GTM Engineering, you will design and build the backend systems and services that power our go-to-market and growth platforms, while also contributing across the stack where needed. This is a strong fit if you want to work in a 0 to 1 space where you can shape what gets built, guide architectural choices, and guide work from specification through production health.

What you'll do

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs that support GTM and growth platforms
  • Contribute across the stack, including frontend work, when a feature or project calls for it
  • Contribute to technical direction for the systems you own, including making build-versus-buy suggestions and evaluating trade-offs between speed and long-term maintainability
  • Identify and resolve performance, scalability, or reliability issues in backend systems before they become user-facing problems
  • Review code and designs from other engineers, and provide feedback for peers
  • Mentor junior engineers on the team
  • Document system design decisions and backend architecture so other engineers can build on your work without you in the room

What you'll bring

  • A strong track record of owning backend systems in production
  • Strong fullstack technical skills with proficiency in Vue, Node, Go, and Ruby
  • Deep experience with backend service design, including API design, data modeling, and database performance
  • A track record of making sound technical trade-offs independently
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment where priorities can shift with campaign or launch timelines
  • Clear written communication skills, including architecture proposals and design records that help distributed teams make progress asynchronously.
  • A practical and proactive approach to collaboration, with transferable experience welcomed from adjacent platform, data, or product engineering backgrounds.

Nice to have

  • Experience building systems for a marketing, growth, or GTM engineering context, such as web platforms, content tooling, or campaign infrastructure
  • Experience working in a remote-first or distributed organization
  • Experience mentoring other engineers and influencing technical direction beyond your own individual work
  • Explaining those trade-offs clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders

About the team

GTM Engineering builds and operates the technical systems that support how we reach and grow our audience. The team partners closely with Marketing, Design, and Content to turn business and campaign goals into reliable technical execution. The work spans web platforms, content tooling, and campaign infrastructure, and it's highly cross-functional, which means backend decisions made here often ripple out to other teams' timelines.

What applying to GitLab usually looks like

Based on publicly available information, candidates applying through greenhouse typically begin with an online application and resume submission, sometimes accompanied by optional screening questions. GitLab's process, like many companies using this ATS, may include multiple stages such as an initial recruiter conversation, one or more interviews with hiring managers or team members, and potentially a skills-based or take-home exercise depending on the role. Communication is usually managed through automated status updates within the platform, and response times vary based on the position and volume of applicants. Candidates can generally expect the process to be structured but may experience variability in pacing. It is commonly advisable to prepare for both behavioral and role-specific technical questions, and to ensure application materials clearly reflect relevant skills, since greenhouse-based processes often emphasize structured evaluation criteria across candidates.
