The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.

Responsibilities:

Provides dedicated support for imaging and spectroscopy platforms at the Omega Laser Facility, in coordination with scientific leadership in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF), and High Energy Density (HED) science. Supports x-ray imaging platforms and spectroscopy systems. Collaborates with scientific staff on research plans to utilize optical diagnostics on OMEGA and EP, velocity interferometry, Thomson spectroscopy and anticipated Raman spectroscopy on OMEGA. Manages scheduling and conflict management for x-ray diagnostic systems. Advises DD&I group lead on readiness and scheduling-related concerns.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Tracks experimental proposal details and implementation on the campaign day. Tracks all subsystems to ensure normal operation. Prepares specific diagnostics requested to match prescription desired by the researcher. Prepares target alignment and supporting vacuum operations for fellow operators. Prepares laser alignment.
  • Performs advanced calibrations and rebuilds operational hardware to ensure equipment is ready to support shot operations.
  • Replaces obsolete hardware with new model, including participating in requirements gathering, hardware selection, installation planning, installation work, coordination of software changes, acceptance test creation and execution, and certification of system for minor systems. Supports the development, testing (mechanical and software) and integration of new diagnostics into the experimental system. Supports installation of new equipment or infrastructure into the Omega laser facility.
  • Works with members of other groups to ensure all experimental systems are available at the necessary times. Responsible for writing/updating procedures to ensure best practices and process improvements are recorded and followed.
  • Completes administrative, safety, and facility training.
  • Other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Associate's degree and 5 years of relevant experience required
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to work in a cleanroom environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • High degree of manual dexterity
  • Strong interpersonal skills working in a team-based environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn additional software as needed
  • Ability to qualify as a NYS Radiological Worker (certification provided at LLE)
  • Applicants should possess a technical background, with experience working with optical, electrical, and/or mechanical systems including vacuum and pressurized gas systems.
  • DOE Q-Cleared or ability to obtain Q clearance
  • Proficiency reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical schematics
  • Technical writing experience
  • Familiarity with optical spectroscopy and/or optical interferometry systems.
