Job description

I quit medicine because I kept watching patients die needlessly, for avoidable reasons. In almost every case, the science and the clinicians were fine. It was the system around them that failed: the way information moved, the way decisions got routed, and the way fragmented teams and fragmented data turned solvable problems into tragedy.

Our mission is human wellbeing, and we're focusing on the breakthrough technology of personalised medicine. Since the beginning, our proprietary insight has always been that the company to create a true active learning data engine with a loss function against human wellbeing would be the one to crack it, becoming one of the most impactful companies in the world as a result.

We're now in 1,100+ clinics, across 4 product lines, serve >20% of the UK population, and have solved >5.7 million patient cases in the past 12 months alone, saving an estimated 8,600 lives. We are cash flow positive, growing fast, and have a tight crew of ~35 people.

Multiple trillion-dollar companies will be built in healthcare over the next two decades, and we intend to be one of them.

We have a knights of the round table culture with a flat hierarchy, where we empower builders to have outsized impact on millions of lives, and where we collaboratively converge on the optimal action without dogma or ego. We're all here to serve a greater mission than ourselves. The closest analogy for our culture is probably Firefly (the TV series): a small crew on a ship at the frontier, each person exceptional in a specific way, deeply loyal to each other and the mission, resourceful under constraints, and having a genuinely good time doing something that matters. We're carefully curated, lean, and wholeheartedly in.

If you want your skills to be at the highest possible stakes, you belong at Anima. Your work here will save lives.

- Shun

Please note this role is only open to those based in the UK.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has 4+ years experience doing 0-1 design work at a high-growth startup. Maybe you were the founding product designer or part of a small team that made a tangible impact.

  • Is obsessed with design and truly loves the craft. You’ve cultivated a meticulous eye for aesthetics and care deeply about every detail.

  • Has experience in frontend development. That may be working with Cursor or Claude Code to ship contributions to production.

  • Is both intellectually rigorous and highly empathic. You’re often able to intuit a user’s situation, motivation, and desired outcome, even with minimal research, and translate these into optimal interactions and interfaces.

  • Is a self-starter who values ownership. You’re comfortable prioritising and working iteratively; guided by user feedback, data, and company goals, without hand-holding.

  • Is a competent product manager and isn’t afraid of code. Maybe you came to design from product management or engineering.

  • Is a clear and compelling communicator. When sharing work with your team or customers, you make an impact and inspire others to listen; even when there’s pushback.

  • Is a team-player who thrives when working with others.

  • Is driven and wants to play their part in redesigning healthcare.

What to expect in the role:

  • A design-first culture

  • High autonomy and ownership. You’ll lead the design for multiple new opportunities, end-to-end.

  • Intellectually challenging projects that will save lives. For example, how might we make it faster for our clinical users to send appointment invites to patients? This path can be traversed by clinical users hundreds of times a day, ensuring people like you and me get the care they need.

  • Close connection with our customers. You’ll work closely with the Anima Champions community; our most fanatical and vocal customers. You’ll join customer calls and visit GP practices to develop a deep understanding of their problems, wants, and needs.

  • The chance to work with exceptional product builders who deeply respect design. Like Skupie, who put the first self-driving semis on Canadian roads. Or Souradip, a doctor with a PhD who’s won awards for his technical achievements. Both are lead engineers at Anima.

  • Influence over our strategy. You’ll shape our roadmap and ensure that we prioritise and build products that lead to the highest total network value deltas. We don’t have Product Managers (and we may never), so both thinking and execution will be required.

  • A chance to build the design machine for the future. You’ll help formalise our design standards and scale our design tools so we keep shipping features that result in a high retention delta.

What applying to Anima usually looks like

Based on publicly available information, candidates applying through ashby can generally expect a structured online application involving a resume submission and possibly some initial screening questions. For roles at Anima, such as account-manager, customer-success-manager, or software-engineer positions, applicants may encounter an initial recruiter or hiring manager screen, followed by additional evaluation stages that could include skills assessments, portfolio reviews for design roles, or technical exercises for engineering roles. The process may include multiple stages, potentially involving conversations with cross-functional team members. Communication is typically handled through the ashby platform, and response times vary depending on the volume of applicants and internal scheduling. Candidates should prepare to discuss relevant experience and may be asked to complete take-home tasks or live exercises depending on the role.
