We help the world run better
At SAP, we keep it simple: you bring your best to us, and we'll bring out the best in you. We're builders touching over 20 industries and 80% of global commerce, and we need your unique talents to help shape what's next. The work is challenging – but it matters. You'll find a place where you can be yourself, prioritize your wellbeing, and truly belong. What's in it for you? Constant learning, skill growth, great benefits, and a team that wants you to grow and succeed.

What you'll do:

Summary: We are looking for a Backend Developer with solid experience in Java and Spring Boot to contribute to SDX (SAP Sustainability Data Exchange). You will work on a modern microservices platform, building APIs, event-driven pipelines, and AI-enabled services that enable companies to exchange standardized sustainability data across their value chains. You will design, develop, and maintain production-grade backend and AI-enabled features with a strong focus on scalability, reliability, and system performance. This role is ideal for a developer who can work with growing autonomy, take ownership of well-defined features, and grow alongside a team of experienced engineers.

The Role: As a Backend Developer on the SDX team, you will contribute to the design, development, testing, deployment, and operation of backend services within our domain-driven architecture. You will collaborate closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and DevOps teams to deliver RESTful APIs, microservices, data processing pipelines, and AI-enabled capabilities. Day-to-day, you will write clean, maintainable code across the full service layer (Controller  Service  Persistence), participate in code reviews, contribute to automated testing strategies, share technical knowledge, and help build team capabilities as you develop deeper expertise in AI-native application development..

As part of the role, you will debug and resolve production issues, contribute to incident analysis, and implement stability and reliability improvements. You will support and enhance CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows, helping ensure reliable delivery and operation of our services. Cross-functional collaboration will be a regular part of the role, including refining requirements, identifying technical solutions, and continuously improving system design.

You will also gain hands-on experience with SAP-specific technologies and our multi-tenant supply chain data model while contributing to a platform that combines modern backend engineering with emerging AI capabilities.

What you bring:

  • Experience with AI/LLM workflows, including prompt design, and integrating AI services into applications
  • Familiarity with observability (logging, metrics, tracing), performance tuning, and system monitoring is expected.
  • Solid programming skills in Java and Spring Boot, with a good understanding of OOP and design principles
  • 2–4 years of experience in backend development
  • Practical knowledge of RESTful API design and microservices architecture
  • Strong coding and debugging skills and hands-on experience building and operating cloud-based microservices.
  • Experience with relational or NoSQL databases (MongoDB experience is a plus; we are actively migrating to SAP HANA)
  • An ownership mindset, combined with experience in testing, validation, and troubleshooting production systems
  • Experience with version control using Git
  • Comfortable working in an agile environment using Scrum methodology

What we consider beneficial:

  • Experience with SAP BTP, CloudFoundry, or other cloud platforms (GCP/AWS/Azure)
  • Familiarity with SAP CAP (CDS models, generated DAOs) or similar code-generation/ORM frameworks
  • Knowledge of Gradle multi-module project builds
  • Familiarity with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with message brokers such as RabbitMQ
  • Exposure to multi-tenancy patterns or supply chain / sustainability domains
  • A passion for continuous learning and staying current with industry trends

Meet your team:

Our mission is to make the world a better place with software that brings more sustainability into all industries.

SDX (SAP Sustainability Data Exchange) is a platform that enables organizations to manage and exchange sustainability data with their business partners — with a current focus on Scope 3 Product Footprint information. Built around industry standards and partnerships with leading sustainability initiatives such as WBCSD PACT and Catena-X, SDX fosters collaboration across global value chains. It is designed to work standalone or connected to any ERP system, making it accessible to businesses of all sizes. As part of the SDX team, you will be building the backbone of a solution that helps companies share reliable, standardized emissions data and drive meaningful change in how industries approach decarbonization.

What applying to SAP usually looks like

Based on publicly available information, candidates applying through successfactors typically begin with an online application and profile submission, often followed by an automated confirmation email. SAP's use of this ATS commonly involves an initial recruiter screening, followed by one or more stages that may include hiring manager conversations, technical or role-specific assessments, and panel discussions depending on the position. Given the breadth of roles available, from technical to business-focused functions, the process can vary in structure and depth. Applicants may be asked to complete skills assessments or case exercises relevant to the role. Communication is generally handled through the platform or email, and response times vary based on volume and role seniority. Candidates should ensure their application materials are complete and tailored, as successfactors-based systems commonly rely on keyword matching and structured data fields during initial screening.
