Job descriptionFull Time
Wanderlust is a trip planning app that drafts day-by-day itineraries from real city and cost data, runs trips offline on the ground through Trip Mode, and lets travelers share and clone journeys in a public feed. We're looking for a Backend Engineer to help build and scale the systems that power planning, offline trip data, and the discovery experience.
What you'll do
- Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs that support itinerary generation, trip data, and offline sync for Trip Mode
- Work with product and mobile engineers to define contracts between backend services and client apps
- Optimize database schemas and queries to support features like route optimization and city/cost data lookups at scale
- Build and maintain integrations with third-party data sources and services
- Improve reliability, performance, and observability of backend systems in production
- Participate in code review, technical design discussions, and on-call rotations
What we're looking for
- Professional experience building and operating backend services in a production environment
- Strong proficiency in at least one backend language (e.g. Python, Go, Java, Node.js, or similar)
- Experience designing relational or NoSQL database schemas and writing efficient queries
- Solid understanding of API design, including REST or GraphQL
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and deploying/monitoring production services
- Comfort working in a fast-moving, collaborative team environment
Nice to have
- Experience building systems that need to work offline or handle intermittent connectivity
- Experience with geospatial data or route/itinerary optimization problems
- Background working on consumer-facing mobile or travel products
