About Attain

Built for consumers and companies, alike. In a world driven by data, we believe consumers and businesses can coexist. Our founders had a vision to empower consumers to leverage their greatest asset, their data, in exchange for modern financial services. Built with this vision in mind, our platform allows consumers to access savings tools, earned wages and rewards without cost or hidden fees. In exchange, they give permission to use their real-time data for research, insights and targeted advertising.

At Attain, your contribution will help us build a more equitable and efficient data sharing ecosystem, whether helping consumers access modern financial services or businesses leverage data to achieve better outcomes. You'll have the opportunity to work directly with hands-on leaders and mission-driven individuals every day.

Attain office hybrid schedule (where applicable):

  • Chicago, IL: 4 days in-office; 1 day remote

About the role

Legal at Attain is a small, high-leverage function. As Assistant General Counsel, Fintech, you'll be one of three embedded in-house lawyers, reporting directly to the General Counsel. You'll work alongside the Assistant General Counsel for our Enterprise business.

This is a generalist in-house role with a focus on consumer fintech. You'll own the legal needs of our fintech business end to end, including earned wage access and our credit-related products and services, across product advisory, litigation, regulatory, and privacy. You'll know the products and the regulators as well as anyone at the company, and you'll be the lawyer the business calls first.

The quality that matters most is autonomy. You'll drive matters with full ownership, within agreed parameters, and you'll have the judgment to escalate when something warrants it. Put plainly, we're looking for someone who manages up rather than someone who needs managing. For the right person, this role is a real path to becoming a general counsel, with the scope and exposure to learn the job from the inside.

The role is proactive by design. You'll anticipate issues and shape decisions before they're made, and you'll help build a modern legal function rather than inherit one, so that a small team covers the ground of a team twice its size.

You'll be a great fit for the role if

  • You have deep consumer fintech experience, want to embed in the business, and want to own its legal needs end to end rather than advise it from a distance
  • You want to get ahead of issues by building review cadences, policies, and programs, and you don't wait for matters to arrive
  • You want to build the function's systems rather than just work its queue, and you're already using AI tools rather than planning to
  • You're comfortable being the only lawyer in the room on your matters, with the judgment to recognize early when something needs escalation or outside expertise
  • You can tell real risk apart from theoretical risk and can give the business a clear answer rather than a laundry list of considerations

What a typical week will look like

  • Serve as the lead lawyer for the consumer fintech business, advising product, marketing, growth, finance, and compliance teams on new features, app and website content, and customer-facing terms
  • Manage licensing and registrations, including applications, renewals, license maintenance, regulatory examinations, and responses to regulator inquiries
  • Support the expansion of our consumer fintech business, including new products
  • Oversee litigation, arbitration, and regulatory matters for the fintech business, directing outside counsel on strategy, scope, budget, and rate discipline
  • Run a periodic review cadence across our apps, websites, and public materials, so what we say and do stays current with the law and with the product
  • Refresh policies and procedures and set a recurring training calendar for employees
  • Build the legal operations layer with AI wherever possible: identify what can be automated and then build it, including intake, playbooks, self-service templates, first-pass review, matter management, and reporting
  • Cover legal needs across the whole company as they arise, including shared services, employment, IP, corporate, financings, insurance, and state-level licensing

Preferred Qualifications

  • JD and active bar membership in good standing
  • Approximately 7+ years of post-JD experience, combining law firm training with time in-house
  • Substantial consumer fintech experience, ideally with earned wage access, bank partnerships, and credit products
  • Working knowledge of the main laws governing earned wage access, credit products, and the wider range of fintech offerings, including TILA and Regulation Z, EFTA and Regulation E, FCRA, the Military Lending Act, TCPA, UDAAP, GLBA, and state licensing and registration regimes
  • Experience managing licensing, regulatory examinations and inquiries, litigation, and arbitration at the state or federal level, including directing outside counsel
  • Legal operations experience and genuine AI fluency. You have built, or are eager to build, playbooks, self-service templates, structured intake, and AI-assisted review
  • Strong plus: experience with data privacy, vendor oversight programs, or government affairs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment

We're excited to hear from you.
