Principal Responsibilities

1.  Reviews and approves leave of absence claims based on eligibility for the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Yale leaves. Reviews physician certification forms and makes leave approval decisions based on the medical information provided. 2.  Regularly communicates and interacts with staff to obtain medical information needed to complete initial FMLA/LOA claim approvals or continued recertification of benefit for  FMLA/LOA. 3.  Reviews and applies State Disability Laws within scope of FMLA/LOA Administration as applicable. 4.  Coordinates LOA/FMLA Administration with STD/WC Administration for concurrent claims. Processing STD claims in database for appropriate time usage and supplemental pay.  5.  Serves as liaison with The Standard regarding Short Term Disability for M&P’s. Explains sick time spend down and waiting periods for STD and helps employees make decisions on use of STD. Addresses issues and complaints received from employees regarding STD approval and administration with The Standard. Provides information to The Standard for all categories of employees for the purpose of determining eligibility and payment on Long Term Disability (LTD) claims. 6.  Assesses the status of employees approaching the end of their leaves or employees in their layoff notification period in order to provide guidance and inform them of the options available at the point of separation including retirement; disability retirement; LTD etc. and the associated benefits. 7.  Tracks and monitors all leaves for compliance with Yale policies and federal and state regulations. Maintains CRM database documenting conversations and events regarding leaves by individual employee. Runs reports and modifies templates as needed. Enters and updates information as necessary.  8.  Communicates with and educates employees to set appropriate expectations both verbally and in writing. 9.  Coordinates the processing of all leaves of absence, ensuring employees and their departments are notified in a timely manner on the status of the request and the University and department is in compliance.  10. Evaluates information received, calculates, adjusts time and pay according to plan and union contractual agreements. 11. Works in close collaboration with internal stakeholders including Benefits Planning, Worker’s Compensation, and Office for Equal Opportunity Programs and Human Resource Generalists.  12. May perform other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience 1.  Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field and two years of experience in absence management, leave requests and/or disability processing.   2.  Solid understanding of leave of absence laws, process and procedure. Skills and Abilities Ability to consult regarding confidential and complex issues. Strong customer service experience, with proven ability to build and manage relationships with external and internal clients. Excellent problem-solving and decision making skills. The skills to multi-task, prioritize, and work in a fast paced, high volume environment and work under pressure. The skills to deliver strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to effectively deliver difficult messages to clients by telephone and in the form of very detailed letters of explanation.
